Foldable MacBooks Coming Soon

New details have emerged about the foldable MacBook-like device that Apple is reportedly developing. According to Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple could ship over 1 million units of this device with a 20-inch folding display by 2026, moving up from his earlier projection of 2027.

While previous rumors have pointed to a 20-inch display, Kuo notes that Apple also considers an 18.8-inch panel. When folded, the 20-inch model will resemble a 14- to 15-inch MacBook, whereas the 18.8-inch version will look similar to a 13- to 14-inch MacBook.

Apple collaborates with LG Display to create a foldable screen with minimal creasing. The device is expected to feature Apple’s M5 processor and could begin production as early as the end of next year.

Supply chain analyst Ross Young initially sparked rumors about Apple’s 20-inch foldable in 2022, which Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman later supported. Gurman suggested that the iPad/MacBook hybrid could have a dual-screen display without a physical keyboard and trackpad.

In 2022, the Korean publication The Elec provided a potential timeline for Apple’s foldable technology, predicting that Apple would start developing these devices after introducing an OLED display to the iPad or MacBook. With the OLED iPad Pro now available, foldables might be Apple’s next focus.

The foldable MacBook is one of many foldable devices Apple is rumored to be working on. In February, a report from The Information disclosed that Apple is still developing at least two folding iPhone prototypes that fold horizontally. Additionally, rumors suggest that Apple is in the early stages of developing a folding iPad, with efforts focused on eliminating any visible creases in the display, a challenge that Samsung is also working to overcome.
