The Shocking Finale: The Boys Wraps Up After 5 Seasons

The Boys are gearing up for their final showdown soon.

Eric Kripke, the showrunner for Prime Video’s anti-hero series, announced on social media that the fifth season, ordered by the streamer in May, will be the last.

“With the Season 4 premiere around the corner, it’s the perfect time to share: Season 5 will be our grand finale!” Kripke posted on X. “This was always the plan, but I had to stay quiet until we got the final approval from Vought. Excited to deliver a gory, epic, and intense conclusion.”

Kripke’s message included an image of a heavily redacted script page from the season four finale, showing only a “fade in” direction and a note from the writer: “See you for our final season, motherfuckers!”

This announcement comes just two days before the June 13 premiere of The Boys’ fourth season.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kripke explained that he always intended to wrap up the series after five seasons. “The story is about Butcher and Homelander’s inevitable clash, and it just wouldn’t work without either of them,” he said, referring to the main characters played by Karl Urban and Antony Starr. “You have to let them collide at some point.”

Though he isn’t certain of every detail, Kripke mentioned he has a clear vision of the show’s conclusion.

The Boys has been a significant success for Prime Video, frequently appearing in Nielsen’s streaming top 10 during new episode releases. It has also led to a spinoff, Gen V, and an animated anthology, Diabolical. Thanks to its popularity, Kripke noted, The Boys’ budget hasn’t suffered as much as other projects amidst industry cutbacks.

“We’re fortunate that The Boys is one of Prime Video’s flagship series, giving us a degree of creative freedom that’s hard to find elsewhere,” said Kripke, named THR’s TV Producer of the Year. “Although we still face budget challenges, we manage to make it work. Gen V, for example, was produced on a smaller budget, and we have to meet specific targets. We’re also developing new projects with tighter budgets than we’ve had before, so we’re definitely feeling the financial constraints.”

Sony Pictures Television produces The Boys in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios, Kripke Enterprises, Original Film, and Point Grey Pictures. Kripke serves as an executive producer alongside Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg of Point Grey, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz of Original Film, Pavun Shetty, Phil Sgriccia, Michaela Starr, Paul Grellong, David Reed, Meredith Glynn, Judalina Neira, Ken F. Levin, and Jason Netter.
